CHOCO Announces "Maavadiya Career Expo"

CHOCO toady announced an ambitious plan to host a career expo in Thinadhoo. This expo would be called "Maavadiya", a tribute to a local boat builder. The expo is expected to be held on 24-25 November 2009.

CHOCO states that "the opportunities for employers to meet with the potential employees are rare in the Maldives, especially in suburban and rural islands. Understanding the requirements of employers and the skills structure of the local labour market has been difficult due to lack of interaction and communication. Furthermore, educational opportunities that are available for the young people need to be informed, at a bit more personal level, face-to-face. The career fields that have a future in the Maldives, especially in the islands, need to be informed through an exposition of employers and educational institutions".

"Hence CHOCO is taking the initiative to organise a career expo in G.Dh. Thinadhoo, in November 24-25, 2009. The expo will be called Maavadiya, a tribute to the best boat builder in the island and is expected to be the first of many such expos to be run in future. Maavadiya would enable employers and educational institutions to interact with an attractive target crowd and market their organisations. It would be a great opportunity for employers and education providers and visitors as well, where each party would have something to gain".

CHOCO started seeking for participants today, and program proposals are being distributed today. CHOCO official said that they have already got two educational institutions who would participate in the expo. One of these institutions boast 7 universities from Malaysia. From the positive initial outlook, CHOCO expects a strong support for the program from the education and employment providers as well as visitors.

"Thinadhoo Support for Maldives as a Wonder of Nature" started last night in Thinadhoo Kulhivaru Park (Basketball Court Area). The event was scheduled to start at 4pm yesterday evening, but due to rain the event was rescheduled to start at night. Voting for Maldives was carried out between 8pm and 11pm.

There is overwhleming support from the public for the program. Several poeple of different age groups visited the area and casted a a vote for Maldives and selected their choices for wonders of nature. Totally 171 people voted last night.

"We had several people visiting last night. 171 people voted last night and some of them include expatriates in the island. If internet connection was a little bit faster, we could have even got more people to cast vote" said Mohamed Noozam, the in-charge of the program.

Internet connection was taken from a shop near-by the area and a home user connection was shared for the program. The only ISP in the island was asked for internet provision about a week in advance, however the ISP was not able to provide internet to the area despite being located just around the corner of the event avenue.

There was also documentaries regarding the environment being shown in the area. CHOCO would like to thank the members who worked hard to carry out this event and all the volunteers who assisted in the program in many ways.

"Thinadhoo's Support to Maldives as a Wonder of Nature" Campaign

To include Maldives among the new 7 wonders of nature, a lot of internal and external support needs to be gathered. We need to give our best effort to gather as many votes for the Maldives from the country itself.
CHOCO is following the government’s lead to gather as many votes for the campaign and is arranging a platform to vote for the Maldives to the residents of Thinadhoo, one of the most populous islands in the country.
In the basketball court of Thinadhoo, a lively program is being organised by CHOCO. There would be the opportunity to vote in one of the possibly 10 computer stations in the arena. Further the voting event will be backed by the music of local bands, including the local Bodu Beru band.
CHOCO is seeking support for the event from various stakeholders, and the objective of this proposal is to gather support of relevant stakeholders for the program.
We urge everyone to take a national interest in this event and support the program in the highest capacity possible for the stakeholder.
